Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German polymath who considered himself, alongside his literary work, a serious investigator of nature (Naturforscher). His 1790 Metamorphosis of Plants argued that all plant organs are modifications of a single archetypal form, the leaf, founding the discipline of morphology. His 1810 Theory of Colours (Zur Farbenlehre) mounted a sustained philosophical challenge to Newton's Opticks, arguing that color arises from the polarity of light and darkness as perceived by an embodied observer rather than from the mathematical decomposition of white light, a dispute he considered his most important achievement. Goethe read Spinoza's Ethics in the 1770s and repeatedly called himself a pantheist, though he told Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi that his own conception of nature diverged from Spinoza's system in important respects. He was deeply ambivalent about Kant, dismissing the Critique of Pure Reason as a dungeon restraining free inquiry while praising the Critique of Judgment for treating nature and art as each having their own internal purposiveness, an idea that shaped his morphological method. His decade of close collaboration and correspondence with Friedrich Schiller, from 1794 until Schiller's death in 1805, more than a thousand letters, produced what both called Weimar Classicism. Hegel drew on Goethe's concept of metamorphosis in his own logic, though Goethe criticized Hegel's systematic method for overlooking the developmental character of natural forms. Arthur Schopenhauer worked alongside Goethe on optical experiments at Weimar in the winter of 1813 to 1814 before publishing his own, more physiologically argued color theory, On Vision and Colours, in 1816. Nietzsche later called Goethe the only German event and the last German for whom he felt any reverence, holding him up as an image of the healthy, fully formed individual.

Goethe Against Newton: The Case for a Human Theory of Color

When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called the Theory of Colours his most important work, ahead of Faust, ahead of everything else he ever wrote, he was not being modest and he was not exaggerating for effect. He meant it, and the claim tells us something about what kind of thinker he actually was. Newton had shown, a century earlier, that white light passing through a prism separates into a spectrum of colors, and that this spectrum could be reassembled back into white light. The mathematics was elegant and the demonstration was repeatable, and Newton treated color as a property that could be extracted from light through a physical apparatus, independent of any observer. Goethe did not dispute Newton's prism experiment. He disputed what it was allowed to mean. In his view, Newton had committed the error of taking as his premise a single phenomenon, artificial at that, building a hypothesis on it, generalizing from one manufactured laboratory event to a theory of color as such. Goethe's alternative began from ordinary looking rather than from apparatus. Color, on his account, is an elementary phenomenon in nature adapted to the sense of vision, arising from the polarity of light and darkness rather than from the decomposition of light alone. Darkness, for Goethe, was not simply the absence of light, as it is for Newton; it was light's essential antipode, an active participant in every color a human eye actually sees. He built his case from phenomena a reader could reproduce with a candle and a prism at home: colored shadows, the edges of objects seen through glass, the way twilight and dawn stain the sky. None of this refuted Newton's mathematics. It refused to let that mathematics stand in for the whole of what color is. The dispute mattered beyond optics because it was, for Goethe, a dispute about method, whether nature is best understood by isolating variables under artificial conditions or by attending patiently to phenomena as they present themselves to an embodied observer. It is the same commitment that drove his morphological study of plants, published twenty years earlier, and the same commitment that would later draw Hegel to incorporate Goethe's account of color into his own philosophy of nature, and draw the young Arthur Schopenhauer to Weimar in the winter of 1813 to work through Goethe's experiments at his side, before parting ways over how far the physiology of the eye, rather than the philosophy of nature, could explain what they had both been staring at.

Goethe and Spinoza: A Borrowed God, Not a Borrowed System

Goethe called himself a pantheist more than once, and he meant it in a fairly specific sense he inherited from Baruch Spinoza, a philosopher who had been dead for nearly a century by the time the young Goethe encountered the Ethics in the 1770s, through the circle of readers gathered around Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi. Spinoza's central claim, that God is not a being separate from the natural world but is identical with it, Deus sive Natura, God or Nature, offered Goethe something his own restless, empirically minded temperament badly wanted: a way to take nature with total seriousness, as sacred and lawful at once, without appealing to a creator standing outside it and issuing instructions from beyond. Goethe adopted the identification of God with nature more or less wholesale, and he adopted something else from Spinoza too, a view about how a life ought to be lived, that ethics is fundamentally advice for shaping one's own character, and that happiness looks less like pleasure than like a kind of stoic, settled equanimity, an inner poise that does not depend on how the world happens to be treating you that day. But the adoption was not uncritical, and Goethe knew it was not. He told Jacobi directly that his own conception of nature diverged from Spinoza's system in important respects, though he left the precise shape of the disagreement less fully worked out than the affinity. What Goethe took from Spinoza was less a completed metaphysical system to be defended proposition by proposition than a permission, permission to treat the natural world as the proper object of reverence, and to go looking, as a working naturalist, for the patterns a creator-God model would have discouraged him from expecting to find on its own terms. The 1780s controversy touched off across German intellectual life by the revelation that Gotthold Ephraim Lessing had privately professed Spinozism, the Pantheismusstreit, put Spinoza's name back at the center of German thought at exactly the moment Goethe's own scientific work was taking shape, and Goethe's quiet, working pantheism became one of the paths by which Spinoza's ideas reached the generation of German Idealists who came after him.
