A German philosopher and sociologist who became director of the Institute for Social Research in 1930 and, in that role, is generally credited with turning it toward the interdisciplinary program of critical theory that gave the Frankfurt School its name and philosophical identity. He led the Institute through its exile from Nazi Germany and co-authored Dialectic of Enlightenment with Theodor Adorno.
