A German philosopher of science who chaired the philosophy of the inductive sciences at the University of Vienna from 1922 and convened the informal Thursday-evening discussion group that became known as the Vienna Circle, giving logical positivism its institutional home; he was shot and killed on the university steps in 1936 by a former student.
