Unitarian minister, biblical critic and abolitionist, associated with the Transcendental Club. His 1841 sermon The Transient and Permanent in Christianity argued that Christian truth does not depend on the historical accuracy of scripture or miracle, a claim close to the one that cost Emerson his welcome at Harvard three years earlier.
