Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) is Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's first mature philosophical work, tracing consciousness through a sequence of shapes, from sense-certainty through self-consciousness, reason and spirit, each collapsing under its own internal contradictions into the next, toward what Hegel calls absolute knowing. Hegel finished the manuscript in Jena in October 1806 while Napoleon's army occupied the city.
