Thomas Carlyle's philosophical satire, serialized in Fraser's Magazine in 1833 to 1834 and published in book form in Boston in 1836 (the first edition anywhere in book form, arranged by Ralph Waldo Emerson) before its first British book edition in 1838. Presented as a commentary on the fictional German philosopher Diogenes Teufelsdrockh's Philosophy of Clothes, it argues that all social, religious and political institutions are transient outer garments for an eternal spiritual substance.
